Background-

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman sat down with a group of senior US business leaders in Chicago and made her case for India as a rising global investment base. She pointed to the country’s expanding strength in artificial intelligence, defense, agriculture, hospitality, food and advanced manufacturing.

Her lineup of meetings included Brandon Tseng of Shield AI, Mark Hoplamazian of Hyatt, Luca Zaramella of Mondelez International, Monish Patolawala of Archer Daniels Midland and Sachin Lawande of Visteon Corporation. Each conversation looked at how these companies might grow their India operations and build stronger technology ties with the country.

Tseng and Sitharaman focused on AI-enabled autonomy and next-generation defense technology, with room for joint research, co-development and co-production.

The talk with Patolawala turned to ADM‘s growing footprint in India, its technology and AI hub in Bengaluru, and how GIFT City could support the company’s push to run more global operations out of India.

Hoplamazian heard from Sitharaman that better connectivity is unlocking hospitality opportunities in smaller tier-II and tier-III cities, with GIFT City also floated as a financing base for Hyatt.

Zaramella’s discussion centered on scaling up Mondelez’s manufacturing and exports from India, while Lawande’s covered India’s rising role in automotive and mobility technology.

Sitharaman used the meetings to underline government moves toward simpler regulations, more digitalization and stronger infrastructure, framing India as a destination for capital, technology and skilled jobs.

The Chicago stop is one leg of Sitharaman’s six-day US trip, which also takes her to the G20 Finance Ministers’ meeting in Asheville and on to New York.
