Background

Power Mech Projects Limited (PMPL) has won its first urban mobility project through a five-year contract, which will involve operating and maintaining the Mumbai Monorail system. The contract covers a 19.54 km corridor with 17 stations, running from Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk to Chembur.

Power Mech will provide complete O&M services, which will include handling rolling stock operations and maintaining upgraded Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling systems according to the agreement. The company will deploy trained personnel to maintain high standards of safety, reliability and service quality while supporting Mumbai Monorail Maharashtra One Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) in improving passenger experience.

Chairman and Managing Director Sajja Kishore Babu explained that the contract helps the company establish itself as a major O&M market player while creating operational advantages through its industrial expertise and urban transit system requirements. The prime objective of the project is to further confirm PMPL’s standing as a significant O&M company in India’s rapidly expanding infrastructure sector.

The Mumbai Monorail is the only straddle monorail system operational in India and has been since 2014. The authorities are expecting ridership to grow with an increase in interconnectivity with other transport networks.

The contract marks a strategic change for Power Mech, which will now operate beyond its main business of power plant operations and maintenance. The company has been steadily expanding its business operations into three areas, which include railways, water projects and renewable energy to support India’s national infrastructure development goals. The company’s stock price increased by almost 6 percent after the announcement.
