Disney Animation’s Zootopia 2 is set to cross the $1 billion global box office milestone, becoming only the second Hollywood film to achieve the feat in 2025, according to company estimates. The animated sequel joins the live-action Lilo & Stitch remake as one of the highest-earning U.S. studio films of the year.
Heading into the weekend, Zootopia 2 had earned $232.7 million in North America and $753.4 million from international markets, underlining its broad global appeal. A significant portion of its success has come from China, where the film has exceeded expectations despite the country’s tighter controls on U.S. movie releases.
Disney said nearly $450 million of the film’s total revenue so far has come from China alone. The sequel also set records in the region, becoming the highest-opening non-local animated film and the top-grossing foreign animated title within five days of release.
Jared Bush, chief creative officer at Walt Disney Animation Studios, said the milestone reflects audiences’ renewed interest in the shared theatrical experience. He noted that the response from viewers around the world has reaffirmed the studio’s belief in family-focused storytelling on the big screen.
The film’s success also shows a clear change in the movie industry. So far this year, PG films have generated $2.7 billion in ticket sales across the U.S. and Canada, compared with $2.5 billion for PG-13 films and $2.4 billion for R-rated titles.
Industry analysts say this trend began last year, when PG films sold more tickets domestically than any other rating category for the first time on record. Experts attribute the shift to younger audiences influencing moviegoing decisions and families returning to theaters for kid-friendly releases.
The only film to surpass Zootopia 2 globally this year remains China’s animated hit Ne Zha 2, which has collected more than $2.2 billion since its release in January.
With Zootopia 2’s success, Disney has landed its second $1 billion film of 2025, cementing its strength in animation.
