Background

In a standout achievement for the 2025 placement season, a computer science engineering student at IIT Hyderabad has landed a Rs 2.5 crore package, the highest ever recorded in the institute’s history.

The offer went to Edward Nathan Varghese, 21, who will join global trading firm Optiver as a software engineer at its Netherlands office. Varghese secured the role after converting a two-month summer internship into a pre-placement offer, making him the only student from his batch to do so with the firm.

Varghese, who grew up in Hyderabad and later studied in Bengaluru, said his strong base in competitive programming and his consistent performance since his first year helped him clear the selection process. He ranked among the country’s top 100 programmers and credited the institute’s flexible course structure for giving him the edge.

This year’s result has broken all past records at IIT Hyderabad. The earlier highest package stood at around Rs 1 crore in 2017. In the last two years, the top offers were Rs 90 lakh in 2023-24 and Rs 66 lakh in 2024-25. Another CSE student this year also secured a package of Rs 1.1 crore, raising the benchmark further.

The overall placement performance has also improved sharply. The average salary rose by 75%, increasing from Rs 20.8 lakh last year to Rs 36.2 lakh in 2025. During Phase 1, which ended in December, students received 24 international offers.

Mayur Vaidya, faculty-in-charge of the Office of Career Services, said the institute is focusing on offering good opportunities to all students, including those in core engineering streams, by inviting PSUs and core firms early in the season.

So far, 196 postgraduate students out of 650 have been placed with an average package of Rs 22 lakh, while 62% of undergraduates who registered have secured job offers.
